Mouth Watering Baked Pumpkin Seeds

Mouth-Watering Baked Pumpkin Seeds

This is a delicious fall favorite as the kids are carving the pumpkins it's super easy to get ready. Not everyone is a fan of pumpkin seeds but they are a great source of zinc which helps fight the seasonal colds going around. I tell the kids that I only make delicious food so this always gets them curious if I actually followed through. Try this recipe out and let me know what your kids say!

Prep Time 30 minutes mins
Course Appetizer
Cuisine American
Servings 10

Equipment

  • 1 bowl
  • 1 cookie sheet

Ingredients

  • 1 pumpkin
  • 2 Tbsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 cooking spray
  • 1 Tbsp Olive Oil

Instructions

  • Take all the insides of the pumpkin and put them in a bowl. If you want to take just one pumpkin that's fine but you can use all the pumpkins your children carve with this recipe.
  • Make sure to wash thoroughly and get all the chunks and strings out as much as possible. Rinse really well and drain.
  • (Optional) If you want to make this into a longer recipe you can let the pumpkin seeds soak overnight in salt water. Just fill the bowl with fresh water and add 2 Tbsp of salt.
  • If you don't soak the seeds overnight that is also fine. Spray down the cookie sheet pan. You can also cover the pan with aluminum foil and spray down the foil for easy cleanup.
  • In the bowl add 1 Tbsp of salt, garlic powder, and olive oil. Mix thoroughly. Spread as evenly as possible on the cookie sheet. Sprinkle the last Tbsp of salt over the top of the spread-out pumpkin seeds. ( I like mine really salty so adjust the salt according to your preferences.
  • Pre-heat the oven at 350 °F
  • When the oven is ready put the seeds in for 25/30 minutes or until browned. About 15 minutes into the cooking time check on the seeds and if you can stir them around. Usually, the outside of the pan cooks faster than the inside. stir to keep the cooking even. If the seeds still look soft and white cook a while longer until golden and crispy.
  • Allow the seeds to cool down before serving. Enjoy!

25 Most Epic Christmas Traditions

Christmas time can be a stressful time of year with all the obligatory parties and presents that need to be bought. Even though people can have a negative experience around the holidays it can also be a time when you pass down traditions and experience fun moments not only with family but with your community around you. There’s a pervasive joy in the air and many times people can remember the wonder that can accompany this time of year. Re-creating these traditions and experiences for our children can bring great fulfillment to us as parents. There’s nothing like seeing the face of a child who is so excited and full of wonder. Here’s a list of epic Christmas Traditions that you can have. These traditions don’t have to be done all in one year but they are fun to go through over a couple of years. Many of these aren’t difficult but they are there to create a lasting memory moment with the people you care about in your life.

  1. Go to a Christmas Tree Farm– If you have never been to a Christmas tree farm it’s such a fun tradition. There’s something about seeing all the Christmas trees and smelling the fresh pine that helps to bring joy. Personally, I love the smell of a fresh Christmas tree in my house so going to chop down one or buy one from a farm is one way to support a local farmer and have the joy of having the kids choose a tree. Yes, I’ll be real here it’s not always the easiest process getting it in the house, setting it up, or even well, let’s be real, remembering to give it water but at least for one year it’s worth the memories. If you do go this route I love this base it’s flexible and easy to stabilize your tree.

2. Hot Chocolate Night- There’s something about cold and hot chocolate that you can’t go wrong with. One of my favorite traditions is having a night where all the kids grab a mug of hot cocoa and fill it to overflowing with marshmallows. One year on Christmas Eve we got all the children their own mugs and filled them with a cocoa bomb. They loved it! They still talk about it to this day and it was years ago now.

3. Advent Calendar– An advent calendar is a fun way for children to keep track of the countdown till Christmas. Let’s be honest about this though there are times when you forget then your child gets a whole week’s worth of candy on one night. Forgetting to open the calendar at the correct time in and of itself is a tradition. It’s a fun way for the kids in your life to learn about how fast and slow life can be and to appreciate every moment no matter what is happening.

4. Decorate the Outside of Your Home– We all have different feelings about decorations. Believe it or not, it can be a heated topic in the family. The reason there can be so much contention is that it can become a competition between neighbors or family members. However, this tradition is supposed to bring light into the dark of the winter. It’s a symbol of hope when you are in a dark place. Along with this tradition, it’s fun during this holiday season to drive around to find people who have gone all out and admire their artistic flair for the season. You don’t have to decorate every year but at least one year plan to go all out and have fun!

5. Decorate Christmas Tree Together- One of the best traditions is decorating the Christmas tree together as a family. It’s not fun when it’s just left up to one person so make sure to include the children in placing ornaments on the tree. This is a moment to reflect on Christmases gone by when you pull out old family Christmas ornaments or child-made ornaments it’s a great time to remember the past and reflect. Sometimes I like to change how I decorate a tree. One year I will do a specific color theme like purple, blue, and pink, and the next year I will change it to red and green. The children get to choose new ornaments to add to the collection every year depending on what the theme of that Christmas is. This helps them feel a part of the tradition as well as they get to see their choices on the tree. Here are some beautiful decorations to start with as a base and build around. The tree is a place where you can let creativity take over.

6. Stringing Popcorn and Cranberry on a String for Decor- This is a fun tradition that started back when there wasn’t a lot of money or choices for decorating the tree. It’s fun to pop the popcorn and grab some cran berries and have the children create a garland that can go on the tree or decorate some part of your home. When you are done you can put it outside for the wildlife to enjoy. This is not a tradition I do every year but typically it’s a great way to get the children involved in decorating.

7. Go See the Nutcracker– While it’s fun to watch the movie the Nutcracker is a classic Christmas tale that is better seen live. There’s nothing like watching all the dancing and costumes that are so present in each part of the story. While it can be pricy depending on where you live it’s completely worth at least one year of spending the time to go and check out your local production. It can also be a fun night of dressing up for you and your kids alike to spend some time out and about.

8. Go Christmas Caroling- Christmas caroling is a fun way to get out and see your community and neighborhood. Whether you are a good singer or not it’s still fun to go singing for people who could be older or unable to get out of their houses to enjoy the holiday season. Here’s a great song book to help you know a list of fun songs to sing. This activity is also great for the kids to be able to get out and about and have some fun singing songs.

9. Hang up Mistletoe– Usually Mistletoe is reserved for the company Christmas party but this is a fun tradition to have at home as well. One thing that you could do is when two people are under it they can give each other a hug instead of a kiss. It makes it more of a fun tradition to show physical affection to others in your family. Another thing you could do is if there’s two people under the mistletoe they can say one nice thing to each other. This makes for a fun game and brings some unity to the holidy season. Here’s a cute Mistletoe for your holiday season.

10. Make a Big Christmas Breakfast– The most amzing thing about the holiday season is spending time with the people that we love. For centuries people have shared meals together. Food has been a way to connect families for a long time. Traditionally mothers are the ones who prepare the holiday meals and personally I love cooking so this works for my family. However, I don’t like cooking all day long especially on Christmas so I make a very large breakfast and then we have leftovers or a snack table for the rest of the day. Part of my Christmas breakfast will include cinnamon rolls, eggs, bacon, sausage, hashbrowns, coffee, and OJ. No matter what your traditional food is for the holiday it’s an opportunity to share a meal and connect with your family. Usually we allow the kids to open their stockings before breakfast and then we eat breakfast before opening presents. It’s a day full of fun! Here are some fun serving dishes to add to your collection.

11. Make a Huge Christmas Eve Dinner– Whether your family has a large Christmas or Christmas Eve dinner this is a big part of the celebration. In my family tradition we have ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, rolls, veggies, and salad. The huge part of dinner is sitting around connecting with family. Children get to hear fun family stories and eating together gives everyone time to catch up. Here’s a great way to get conversations started around the table. Creating an atmosphere of joy and fun around the dinner table during the holidays is fun for everyone!

12. Go To a Christmas Service- Whether you are religious or not, one tradition is going to a Christmas service. At least once in the many Christmases this is a fun thing to do. To join with others singing and listening to a message about hope its a way to lift up your spirits and bring unity to you and those you love. Because the Christmas story is one that is based in Christianity it’s fun to go back to the source and hear about the origins of the story.

13. Hanging Stockings– Hanging stockings can be such a fun activity for the kids to participate in. It’s an opportunity to have fun thinking about past stocking stuffers. You can even talk about how children use to get oranges in their stockings and it was considered an amazing gift. Here are some cute stockings that you can add to your collection. You can also inspire your children to think of things they would like to put in your stockings or their siblings stocking. The joy of giving out weighs the joy of recieving and taking time to teach them how to think about others during this time of year is huge!

14. Enjoy a Christmas Movie as a Family– There’s nothing like having a fire in the fire place and a classic Christmas movie playing while it’s cold or snowing outside. This is a great tradition that can be fun to add hot chocolate to or cuddling up with a blanket. Here’s a great list of holiday movies and a little review. There’s a great mixture of old and new family friendly Christmas movies on the list. Christmas movies can be watched together year after year and there’s nothing like sharing memories and movie lines.

15. Enjoy Snow or Ice – Whether you live where there’s lots of snow or barely any its always a fun thing to find snow or ice to play in at some point during the holiday season. You can go ice skating or have a snowball fight. However you enjoy the snow it’s a great time to spend time having fun with your kids and getting some fresh air together. Playing in the snow is a great way to have fun during the holiday season!

16. Baking Christmas Cookies– Baking Christmas cookies is a great tradition. You can have them pre-made or make them from scratch either way this is a fun activity to do with kids. Whether you do ginger bread men or sugar cookies and decorate them you can make a fun night full of making cookies. Here are some fun Christmas cookie cutters! Enjoy the fun tradition of cookie baking.

17. Have Kids Write Christmas List To Santa– One of the funnest things to do is have your kids write their Christmas list. It’s a time for them to dream about possabilities even though they might not get everyting on their list it’s a fun tradition for kids to dream during the holiday season. This also helps you to know what your kids want for Christmas it makes shopping easier then just guessing. Here’s a cute letter idea for how you can have them write down their ideas. This is such a fun way to capture the season and wonder.

18. Serve at a Homeless Shelter- During this time of year it’s important to give back. It’s a time to reflect on all that you have and give to those who don’t. Whether you demonstrate that by buying toys for kids who won’t get any or by serving in a homeless shelter it’s good to remember how grateful you are for all the things you have. Bringing your children to serve along side you will also help them to see children or people who have less than them and it will create an ability to reflect on all they have.

19. Find a Charity to Give New Toys To- There are so many children in fostercare or in poverty that don’t get gifts for Christmas. Giving toys is such a fun way for your children to get involved and to think about other kids during this holiday. There are many different charities that are available in your area or around the country for you to get involved with. Have your children be a part of the process of deciding where to give toys and what to give is a powerful lesson for them. Not every year will you have the time but it’s important to give when you can to making the world a bit brighter during this time of year.

20. White Elephant Gift Exchange– The white elephant gift exchange is such a fun way for extended families to shar gifts without going broke. You can set a limit on how much you want to spend or not. Either way it always gets fun when people get gifts that they have to steal or get stolen from. Every year we add scratch off tickets to our christmas gifts which make for a fun party. One year grandma won $500! Mainly we play this game with extended family when we have our family Christmas party every year. It makes for such a fun time with lots of laughter and memories made.

21. Elf on the Shelf- There’s so much debate about how this is not a good motivation for children to be good which I do agree it can be a bit creepy however, I changed the rules for the Elf. Instead of the Elf watching my kid to catch her being good the elf gets himself in trouble all the time and gets caught for getting in trouble. This makes it hilarious and fun to wake up to see what the Elf did the previous night. I don’t do anything too extravegant but it is fun to come up with creative ideas on how the elf can get himself in trouble. I don’t recommend this every year because it can drive you nuts but its fun to do every now and then. Here’s the elf on the shelf initial box. Over the years I have added to the collection and made all sorts of fun things come out of the Elf’s silliness. Have fun with the Elf!

22. Read the Christmas Story of Jesus– Traditionally the story of Jesus and how he was born is part of the culture of Christmas. Passing down the story of how we celebrate hope coming to the world puts a lot of our traditions and songs into perspective. It’s fun to hear and go over the story that has shaped and formed the foundation of the holiday. Here’s an easy kids version of the story to read to your kids during this season.

23. Read The Night Before Christmas- One of the most famous poems and stories for Christmas was the Night Before Christmas. Reading this story is a tradition usually reserved for Christmas Eve. It’s a fun story for the children to fall asleep to dream about the wonder and hope for the next day. This story is full of fun imagry of Christmas and warmth. It’s a great classic story. Here’s a great version of this book!

24. Christmas Eve Present- Every family does Christmas Eve different but one fun tradition is to let the children open one gift on Christmas Eve. The way we do this in our family is to put the gift under a top hat with the children’s name on it. This top hat eventually goes on the top of their snowman boxes. These boxes hold all their gifts. Here’s how to make the snowman boxes. We usually pick games for their Christmas Eve presents because then we can have a game night that night and enjoy each others company. This creates and ability to connect and have fun the night before the big day!

25. Christmas Cards– Not always do we do Christmas card from us to family and friends but this is a tradition that is fun to have the children involved in. Instead of having them printed by a professional have your children hand make cards for a few family members who are far away. It’s such a fun treat to connect with family far and near and it’s also fun for the kids to get involved. Here’s a cute coloring kit for your kids to make their own cards.

No matter what your traditions it’s always fun to see what other people value in their homes during the holidays. Have fun with all the traditions here and add more to your list! Happy Holidays!

How To Make Christmas Snowman Gift Boxes

This lesson may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for more info.

Christmas is my favorite time of year! I always love to find ways to fold traditional moments into the holidays. While others might find it tedious I fully enjoy creating an amazing Christmas experience for the kids in my life. One of the greatest traditions that we have in our family is the snowmen gift boxes. As we grew as a family we had to adapt how we organized all the presents. We have 3 families who celebrate together because we are all family between us we have 7 kids and 4 adults. It got very overwhelming to organize and keep everything in the correct space with that many kids. I had seen an idea on Pinterest that I thought might work so I adapted it to our family and made it something of a tradition in our home.

First, you need to find 3 types of boxes. I used these moving boxes. Depending on how many kids you have each snowman needs 3 boxes. One small, medium, and large. The moving boxes I purchased 3 years ago and don’t re-purchase these each year because we save the snowmen for the next year if you are worried about the cost of the box I get boxes that will last years so I don’t have to redo these every year.

Santa’s workshop opens in October and helps me to not leave everything to the last minute.

The next step is choosing the wrapping paper. My suggestion is to get large amounts of the same paper but different patterns for every snowman. This way you can patch the boxes if they get torn for the next year. Here’s some wrapping paper I find adorable! When you wrap the boxes make sure that you leave the tops open so that you can put a hole at the top and use a ribbon to tie the tops closed. You don’t want the children tearing wrapping paper off the boxes because you will reuse them. Their gifts will be inside the boxes individually wrapped this is just to keep everything organized.

Here’s the inside of the box to see how it is wrapped.

The next step in the process after wrapping all of the boxes is to make holes in the boxes. You need at least 2 holes on the tops of the boxes so you can thread through some ribbon to tie the boxes shut. You will also need two small holes in the middle box so that you can feed the arms through it. For the arms, I used black pipe cleaners.

Tie knots on the back of the ribbons and feed them through the tops. Make sure they are long enough to tie into cute bows. For the pipe cleaner arms have 3 pipe cleaners and tie them into an arm and 3 finger-shaped hand. Feed the arm part through the hole in the middle box and make the back a big knot so the arm doesn’t fall out. The arms will be a bit floppy but that’s ok.

Snowman’s arm

Here’s the back of the arm that you need to feed through the hole.

When you are finished wrapping, ribboning, and putting the arms in. Then you need to start with the buttons, face, and nose. For this, you will need black and orange construction paper. Make 6 (2in) black circles, 5 (1.5in) black circles, and 1 (4.5in) orange triangle. 4 of the circles will be the buttons on the snowman. The other 2 (2in) circles will be the eyes. The smaller circles will be used as the smile on the face of the snowman. Take the triangle and fold the long side of it by 1/2 and in. You will use this side to attach it to the face of the snowman.

5 of the smaller circle for the smile and 2 for the larger eyes.
Here are the 2in circle buttons. Make sure there are 2 buttons on the bottom and middleboxes.
Here’s the orange triangle nose. Fold it by 1/2 an inch and then glue it to the box.
Final Product!

Our tradition includes top hats that I made out of black cardboard the first year we had them. Later I found top hat tree toppers that worked way better. We put the kids’ names on each of the hats. On Christmas Eve night we set all the hats out on the table after dinner and we have Christmas Eve presents under each hat. Then when the kids are asleep we put the hat on their snowman so they know which one is theirs in the morning. This is such a fun tradition for all the kids to follow they love waking up to find out which one belongs to them. I like to change it up every year so they don’t know which is theirs.

Originally we bought these to curb our spending but it didn’t really work out that way since I got pretty large boxes to begin with however we have kept to a couple of rules. The top box usually holds art, books, coloring supplies, or notebooks. The middle box is usually filled with the toys they requested for that year though as the kids get older it’s hard to fill with things because they don’t really want that many toys anymore. The largest box we try and fill with clothing, blankets, shoes, or pillows. One year we got each of the kids a squish mellow and it worked great in the bottom box. We originally didn’t wrap any of the presents in the boxes but it didn’t really work out as a surprise that way. I find the kids enjoy actually unwrapping something so I wrap each gift individually and put it in the boxes.

We love celebrating Christmas with our snowman tradition. What is a special tradition you all like to use to celebrate?

25 Thrilling Thanksgiving Traditions!

This lesson may contain affiliate links. Please read my disclosure for more info.

Thanksgiving is such a great holiday where you can gather with friends and family. The goal of many of our traditions on this holiday is to bring us together to reflect and connect. It’s important that we connect as loved ones especially as the weather gets colder. Being connected with family and thinking about all the things we are grateful for is a wonderful way to combat seasonal depression. Our traditions help to keep us connected to each other in meaningful ways. While traditions can take time to prepare or can add pressure to our lives it’s still worth it in the long run to create memories that will last forever. Here are 25 fun traditions that can come in handy when celebrating Thanksgiving!

  1. The Smell of Turkey in the morning is one of my favorite traditions. Having the turkey slow roast all night long is my favorite part of Thanksgiving. I might not have the picture-perfect turkey but I for sure have the most tender. One of my favorite things when prepping the turkey is setting it in the roasting pan and getting it all ready to bake. There’s nothing like a delicious smell of turkey wafting through the air to get you in the festive mood.

2. Family Gathering– This time of year can be hard and good all at the same time. You might laugh at uncle Bob’s jokes but many times family can bring up mixed emotions. When you choose to gather with your family remember how to keep your boundaries. It’s ok to not invite someone who will violate those boundaries. Here’s a great book to read to prepare for your family interactions.

3. Watch Macys Day Parade– When I was a child my grandmother would put the Macys Day parade on as they were all cooking and getting ready for the Thanksgiving day meal. It is a bit of a national tradition and it’s always fun to see the huge balloons that they bring down the road. A fun game to play during the viewing is how many turkies can you spot!

4. Donate to a Local Charity– When you are poor and don’t have access to a lot of resources holidays can be hard. Helping to support local charities by donating food is a great way to not only teach your children about giving but it can help someone else have a great holiday experience. Think about what kind of food would make you feel the holiday joy and donate that or money to a place that can provide that for families in need.

5. Feed the Homeless- While we should be doing this regularly it’s important to at least doing it once especially as a family. If you want you can choose a day close to the holiday that’s not the actual day that will help put your kids in a position to serve and underserved population. It’s a great way to have your children become aware of a world that they might not experience every day.

6. Take Food to an Elderly Neighbor- Not always do the people in our neighborhoods have places to go or family around them. Be aware of the neighbors you have in your world and figure out who will not be with family. Either invite them into your family to join your celebration or if they are house bound bring food to them. It doesn’t take much to reach out and make someones holiday a little better. To keep their meal hot while transporting you can use this!

7. Invite Single Friends to Your Celebration- Holidays can be hard for people who don’t have family or live far away from family. If you have a single friend who has no where to go invite them over to celebrate with you. This could also go for single mothers. Think of co-workers or people in your social circle that may have family who live far away. No one wants to be alone around the holidays.

8. Kids Table– There’s always been a tradition in all the households I’ve been in of having a kids table. It’s usually smaller and it’s great to have the kids gather around a table where they can start building community and connection with their family and friends. I remember when it was a big deal to move to the adult table and that tradition can have great significance in your growing up process. I always add a table cloth the kids can color and enjoy. Here’s a great choice!

9. Creative Side Dishes- Along with all the traditional foods like stuffing, turkey, and mashed potatoes this is a great time of year to whip out the recipes that aren’t always made. It’s fun to experiment in the kitchen with new side dishes that you can test out on your audience to see if it makes the cut or not. Here’s a great blog about some strange sides you could possibly use. One of the biggest pains in my butt is finding enough serving utensils for everyones dishes during the holidays so I’m planning ahead this year and I’ve grabbed this to help me out!

10. Collecting Leaves and Pinecones to Decorate- This is always fun to do with kids. Collecting fall items outside and bringing them inside to decorate can be a festive way to include kids in the preperations. Be creative with your kids on how to incorporate their creativity into the decor. Let them run with some fun ideas it will be a moment of pride to see their creations throughout the holiday.

11. Kids Holiday Crafts– It’s so cute to see kids wearing thier thanksgiving hats or painting thanksgiving hand turkies. Having a craft while cooking can help the kids stay out of the kitchen and distracted as long as there’s someone who is able to manage all of it. It’s fun just to put a few crafts out and keep them entertained. Here’s a great craft that’s not as messy as painting and it’s all cut out and ready to go!

12. Family Dinner Talk- Part of Thanksgiving is the talk around the table though politics and religion might be avoided to keep the peace it’s still an imporant part of bonding over the holidays. Many family matters like catching up with each others lives and talking about traditions happen around the table. Focusing on connecting and sharing moments that are going to be remembered is a great way to teach traditions to the kids in the room. Those little ear hear everything and see how we interact with each other and they learn what and how to connect to family by watching us.

13. Story Telling– This goes along with dinner talk but allowing the elders in your family to tell stories of their lives helps us to learn about where we come from. Thanksgiving is a great place to hear the stories from our family that helps to build family identity. Kids will connect with their elders when they can hear their stories. There’s a great sense of being heard and honored when the elders in our family get to share their experiences in life. It’s also a great way to stave off loneliness when people know our stories what a great time to tell them!

14. Thanksgiving Coloring Pages- When my child was a toddler I loved printing out coloring pages to keep her entertained. She did a great job at being entertained with the other littles at the kids table. Every Thanksgiving I put several coloring pages out for the toddlers in the family with a hand full of crayons. It’s a fun way to entertain them and you can hang them up somewhere to add to the decorations.

15. Family Word Search Thanksgiving Style- Along with the kids coloring pages I love printing out some word searches for the adults. It’s a fun way to keep them entertained while dinner is being cooked. You can even make it fun by giving a prize to whoever completes the task first. Having a pre-game before dinner is a fun activity to get the family connected. Here’s a fun book with some choices in them!

16. Say What You are Thankful For- Such a great tradition that we enjoy in our family is to say what we are thankful for. It’s a great way to keep this holiday in the right spirit. Usually right before we eat we go around and express one thing that we are thankful for from the past year. It helps to bond people and keeps thankfulness in the forefront of our thoughts.

17. Football Game Watching- If you are in a football family this is a big football day. It’s usually tradition to have the game going while dinner is being prepared. Football can be a fun way to celebrate a day full of food and hanging with family. Usually there are multiple games playing at the same time so good chances are that you can find a team you would like to cheer for. If you are like me and have a huge family it’s important to have a large TV so that no one is left out of the play by play. Here’s a great TV that you can play the big game on!

18. Dessert and Coffee- After a huge dinner it takes some time to be able to eat dessert. We usually wait a couple hours before we cut the pie because it’s so much food to get through. It’s a fun tradtion to have a slice of pie but there are all sorts of desserts you can make that isn’t just pie. Having a good cup of coffee with a sweet dessert helps to bring the eating to a close. There’s nothing like having good conversation, coffee, and dessert.

19. Family After Dinner Walk- We all know that it’s so hard to move after eat all that food however a good walk through the fall leave helps to burn some calories. Walking is not only good exercise but it’s also a great way to bond as a family. If you have eaten early enough having an early evening walk is a great refreshing way to celebrate.

20. Family Games– I love family games it’s a great way to laugh and have fun with your family. A wonderful time to enjoy games is when everyone is in the same house. This is a fun way for older adults to teach the younger generation some good games they played when they were younger. Also if you are brave youcan purchase a few new games to all learn together. One of my favorite game to play with family is this! Check it out.

21. Family Nap– With a delicious dinner can come a great feeling of tired. If you took your walk you still might feel tired so taking a short snooze on the couch or in a chair is not uncommon. Uncle Bob and grandpa Joe are not the only ones who can be found snoring away it’s ok to let your body rest and recover. Having a family nap is a great way to recover from the holidays.

22. Family Photos- Memories are so important for so many reasons. When you get all the family together it’s important to take pictures to remember the good times. Also as the elders get older they might not be around as long so it’s good to catch those moments so that you will have something to give to your children. Here’s a great way to keep all your pictures in one place and pull them out the following Thanksgiving so that you can remember the good times.

23. Watching a Holiday Movie- When you are all done with the food festivities it’s a fun time to rest while watching a holiday movie. Usually we start watching Christmas movies Thanksgiving evening. It’s a fun way to start the Christmas season and finish up the Thanksgiving one. One of the best holiday movie that we love to watch as a family is Home Alone. Even though it’s old our kids love this movie it’s fun and light hearted and can show how family works even if it’s disfunctional at times.

24. Left Overs for Dinner- Usually if you eat early in the afternoon family will be hungry around evening time. Having left overs is a pretty staple tradition on Thanksgiving. We usually eat a version of Thanksgiving dinner all week long. With so much food you will have lots of left over and it’s great to have it through out the week to help extend the holiday. I even take the bones from the turkey and boil them to make bone broth as a base for soups for the winter. Here’s a some great containers for all that food!

25. Christmas Tree Hunt- I love the Christmas season and part of my Thanksgiving week tradition is to go get our tree. Usually we do it the Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend. It’s a fun tradition to go either chop down or buy a fresh tree. I love the smell of the holiday season in my home. If you have any fun family traditions please leave a comment below and share them I’d love to hear what they are!

10 Signs to Watch Out for When Identifying a Child Who is Being Groomed

This article is written to advocate and support https://helpingsurvivors.org/. If you know of someone who is being groomed and preyed upon please contact them for support and advocacy.

DISCLAIMER: All the opinions expressed here are purely my own and I’m not a licences therapist. Please seek professional help for you or any children in your world if you find this happening to you.

In this day and age, there’s a lot of advocacy and awareness around the issue of grooming. A quick definition of grooming is when an adult uses tactics of manipulation to target, trap, and eventually sexually molest a child. There are many tactics used over time to manipulate and trick a child into a dangerous situation. Unfortunately, it can happen most often in families right under the parent’s noses. Young children don’t often get groomed by complete strangers (unless they have access to the internet) they will often be targeted by friends of the family, the family themselves, or any adult who they consistently see over a long period of time. This doesn’t mean you have to be paranoid about every adult your child interacts with. We are going to go over 10 different signs you can watch out for to keep your child safe.

  1. Isolation– The goal of any abuser is to create distance between a child or person who is their target and the caregiver or family. This is done in a few ways. One is starting to cast doubt on the caregiver’s intentions and motives. Another way is using the victim’s pain to create a separation between them and their caregiver. Here’s an example of that. If a child has been corrected by a caregiver the predator will ask why the child is so upset and say oh they were wrong to correct you you didn’t do anything bad. With that, they re-enforce the negative feelings and it can create a bonding moment. They can also say things like they just don’t understand you but I know how you feel. These false comforts bring the connection to a child who at the moment really needs someone to connect to. Slowly over time, they will build walls and secrets that only are shared between them. This creates a perfect target for a child to be hurt and no one knows because by the time it happens the separation has already taken place. If you notice a child who is pulling away consistently and is gravitating towards a certain individual for comfort keep an eye out for any of the other signs.

2. Overly Sexual Behavior– If you notice that a child in your care or in your world is exhibiting overtly sexual behavior it’s time to figure out where that is coming from. One of the ways a predator can find their prey is by identifying children who have already been preyed upon before. If a child has already suffered from sexual abuse it’s likely they will become a target again to another predator. Usually, they can give off a sexual vibe or signal that can be picked up by people who prey on children. Behaviors to watch out for are flirting, masturbation, suggestive body movements, or even wearing sexy clothing. I will caveat this by saying some children have a fun silly nature about them and they really don’t have any exposure so you have to really discern and match it with other behaviors and signs.

3. Aggression- If a child is being sexually abused and no adult is there to protect them their behavior can be very aggressive in everyday life interactions. There can be giant mood swings that seem to be triggered out of nowhere. I will say that children are emotional beings in general but usually, they can figure out how to regulate themselves on some level if they are in a healthy and safe environment. If a child is being exposed to being abused on a consistent basis their world is unsafe and unpredictable and because of that, they become overtly aggressive in an attempt to protect themselves from the harm they are expecting. Aggression is an indicating behavior of undealt with fear. This can be another indicator of abuse.

4. Depression– For some reason we tend to relegate depression to adults but in reality children can suffer from it as well. Usually, it’s an indicator that something is wrong in their environment. We can experience depression when we are the target of control and manipulation and children are the same. We are not created for someone to control us no matter what the adults in the world believe. We are to be guided, loved, connected to, and helped. When a child is the victim of sexual assalt the will dissasociate from their bodies at times to protect themselves. This can be seen as withdrawn, hiding behavior, or extended sleeping patterns. If you notice a child who doesn’t seem to enage with others and who seems more adult with their responses and interaction it can be an indicator of abuse.

5. Eating Disorders– We often think of eating disorders as more applying to females but in reality it can also apply to males. The nexus is eating disorders are caused by this idea I’ll eat more to become unattractive to protect myself or I hate my body and I won’t eat so that I get the comfort I find through relationships no matter how unhealthy they are. They can stem from some sexual abuse and often start to manifest when they are a young child. Not every child who has an eating disorder has been sexually preyed upon but it can be an indicating factor in determining if there’s something going on. If you observe severe fluctuations in weight or strange eating habits in younger children who shouldn’t have problems it’s often a sign that something isn’t right.

6. Self-Harm– We have heard so many stories of teenagers who self harm and how the reason is because their was some sort of abuse in the environment but what about littlier children? The big thing I have seen with this is self hitting. I had a foster daughter who was in my house who hit herself a lot. She would also very often hit her head against the wall or floor when she was upset. Her self harm was re-enforcing the lie that she wasn’t worth protecting. It doesn’t mean that all children who hit themsleves or bang their head against the wall or floor is being abused. However, if there’s a consistent behavior that leans towards the self-harm side it can be another indicator of sexual abuse. Another reason for self harm is believe it or not it can be a form of self-regulation. It helps the child feel in control of their world again.

7. Recieving Gifts- Often people who target children for grooming will give the child gifts. Sometimes they can be expensive or something that they always wanted. This will build rapport with children by winning them over through things they always wanted. First thing we tell children about stranger danger is they should never take anything from a stranger but what about an adult who they know? Not every adult who gives a child they know a gift has evil intentions but there usually is a pattern. Usually it’s not on the childs birthday or special occasion, it can be expensive or something the child has always wanted, and the gift giving pattern is pretty frequent. If you notice this behavior coming from someone along with the other signs ask the child about the gifts. I’ve heard from survivors that the gifts were given after a moment of abuse as a reward of sorts for letting their perpetrator do that to them. This is another idicator of something that is just not right.

8. No Boundaries- Boundaries are important to learn as a child grows. We all have to know what appropriate behavior is expected in our world to function in it. When we talk about children we know that they are just learning boundaries but there are some indicators and instincts that children are born with that will regulate and keep them safe. One big one is attachment. When a child is appropriately attached as an infant they will look to their parent before walking that first step or going into another room. They check with their parent to make sure that they are ok. Children with good boundaries will shy away from strangers or new situations and cling to their caregiver and this is a very normal behavior response. However, children who run up to strangers without looking for their caregiver, have no physical boundaries with people, or don’t look for a caregiver when wondering off can have what is called RAD. Reactive Attachment Disorder is a disorder where children are not bonded properly to their caregiver so they just attach themselves to whoever is around them.

I had a foster daughter who had RAD and she would walk up to anyone on the street and just hold their hand or hug them. She had no fear of a stranger picking her up or taking her away. This is a very scary place to be in with a child. Predetors look for these kids because they are easy to manipulate and tartget and very easy to take away from care givers. This doesn’t mean the kid is friendly it means they aren’t attached to any one person so they become attached to everyone they meet. It’s a very dangerous place for a child to be in. If you see a child like this in your world watch them carefully because they are perfect targets for abusers and most likely the reason they are that way in the first place is because they have been abused.

9. Withdrawn From Family– Often times we will think of sullen teenagers at family events not wanting to be engaged with the world around them but what if a small child is withdrawn? Because a lot of abuse occurs in families watching a child and how they engage or disengage with their family members is an indicator of how they feel around that person. I never force a child to “act” a certain way with a family member just because they are family because children can tell us something is wrong through their reactions. Maybe there’s a reason why your child doesn’t want to sit next to their uncle. Being an observer of behavior allows for you to catch a reaction and from that reaction become an explorer into why they exhibited that behavior. Asking good questions and not accusing a child helps them to feel safe enough to share what’s going on. Validating feelings is important. Even if you don’t feel it it’s important make sure they feel supported through their responses.

10. Disengaged in School- Often times with children who are being abused especially sexually their school performance is lacking. It makes sense of course if they are in survival mode they aren’t going to be thinking about the math problem they have in front of them. What is important to know is that instead of focusing on fixing the studying part of their school focus on what happened to them? When we ask the question what happened it helps to determine the root of their concentration problems instead of continuing to address the academic side we can find the root of why it’s becoming so hard for them. I know as a teacher it can be hard to manage all of the children in your class but if you notice a child who is particularly disengaged ask some questions so that you can come up with a permenant solution or expose abuse that could be happening.

With all of these signs it indicates someone either abusing them or taking advantage of them on some level. When we come up with solutions for these problems we have to create plans of care for these children so that they have the tools to adapt as they grow older. What can you do? Get help. This recipe is one of my favorites! It's a refreshing take on fish tacos. I love to adjust and make recipes my own and here's my version of fish tacos. It takes away the fish taste and it's a refreshing take on a favorite dinner in our house. Even the kids agree!

Prep Time 45 minutes mins
Cook Time 9 minutes mins
Course Main Course
Cuisine Mexican
Servings 2

Equipment

  • 1 pan
  • 1 Mixing Bowl

Ingredients

  • 1/2 Cup Pinot Grigio
  • 2 tsp Cocnut Aminos
  • 4 tsp Garlic powder
  • 6 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 Cup Cilantro
  • 1 Bag of chopped green cabbage
  • 5 Limes l
  • 4 Lemons
  • 1 Avocado
  • 1 tbsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp Apple Cider Vineger

Instructions

  • Thaw Fish
  • Merinade fish using 1/2 cup of wine, 3 tsp garlic powder, 2 tsp Coconut Aminos, 3 tsp salt, 1/2 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup lime juice. Let stand for 30 minutes
  • Make Slaw: Mix cabbage with 1/2 cup lemon juice, 1/4 cup lime juice, 1/2 cup cilantro, 1 avocado, 3 tsp of salt, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tbsp honey, and 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar. Allow slaw to marinade.
  • Once the fish has marinated turn on the pan and put your preferred cooking spray in the pan. Let the fish cook until it's done all the way inside you can add a little of the marinade juice to the pan to steam the fish. Usually, this will take about 5/10 min each side. Make sure you don't cook it too long or it will dry out. Also if you aren't sure it's cooked inside cut it in the pan and look inside. What should happen is it should flake apart when done. You can put a lid over the pan to steam it as you cook it. Make sure you flip it to cook evenly on both sides.
  • When you have finished cooking the fish get ready to assemble the taco. Use fresh mozzarella cheese pulled apart in a taco shell, put the fish on top of the cheese, and then the slaw and roll up the taco.
  • Enjoy your fish tacos with a great glass of Pinot!

Notes

This recipe can be adjusted to your specific tastes. You can add sour cream or hot sauce to your tacos. The fun thing about tacos is you can add whatever you want!
I love to use this taco tray to have around the table! Have family fun for everyone!
